RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
